How does a family cargo bike subscription work in London?

A family cargo bike subscription lets London parents hire an electric cargo bike on a flexible monthly basis, instead of buying one (which can cost £4,000–£7,000) or running a second car. Moon Bike Rentals subscriptions start at £125 per month and include a heavy-duty lock, GPS tracking and regular servicing. The rental renews monthly from a one-month minimum up to the 84-day maximum hire period, and you can end it with one week’s notice before any renewal.

You choose a bike based on your family — a long-tail for two children, a front-box for two to three little ones, or a compact bike for one — book a test ride at the West London workshop, and we set it up for your kids before you ride away. Electric cargo bikes need no licence, no CBT and no road tax, and are exempt from ULEZ and the congestion charge. Moon Bike Rentals is a brand of Otto Scooter Ltd, which has operated electric two-wheelers in London since 2019.

Questions, answered

Frequently asked

Do I need a licence to ride an electric cargo bike?
No. Electric cargo bikes are classed as electrically assisted pedal cycles (EAPCs), so you need no licence, no CBT, no road tax — and no insurance is legally required. You can ride one if you are 14 or over (the account holder must be 18 or over). Optional Damage & Excess Protection is available at £20/month to cap what you’d pay if the bike is damaged or stolen.
Is it safe to carry my children on a cargo bike?
Yes. Our cargo bikes are purpose-built to carry children, with secure seats, footrests, harnesses and hydraulic disc brakes. We set the bike up for your children at handover and walk you through loading them safely. Helmets are recommended for every passenger.
How many children can a cargo bike carry?
It depends on the model: a long-tail carries two children on the rear deck, a front-box bike can carry two to three little ones in the box, and our one-child e-bikes carry one child in a fitted seat. The long-tail and front-box are arriving soon — register your interest and we will contact you as soon as they land. Tell us your family and we will match the right bike.
Is servicing included?
Yes. Regular servicing, brake and battery checks and consumable parts are all included in the monthly subscription, carried out at our West London workshop.
Is this cargo bike hire or a subscription?
Both, in effect: Moon Bike Rentals is longer-term cargo bike hire in London on a monthly subscription. Unlike daily hire from a bike shop, the bike lives with you — one monthly price includes a heavy-duty lock, GPS tracking, servicing and child seats set up for your family, renewing monthly from a one-month minimum up to the 84-day maximum hire period.
What happens if the bike is stolen?
Every bike comes with a heavy-duty lock and GPS tracking — keep it locked whenever it’s unattended, and never leave the battery or charger with the bike overnight. In the event of theft, report it to the police immediately and contact us: we will help recover it or arrange a replacement. Without Damage & Excess Protection your liability for theft or damage is capped at a £600 excess; with it (£20/month) at £50. The waiver is a contractual waiver, not insurance, and never applies where there is abuse, negligence, breach of the rental agreement, use by an unauthorised person, or where the battery and charger are not returned after a theft.
Can I cancel any time?
The minimum term is one month; after that the subscription renews monthly, up to the maximum hire period of 84 days. You can end it at any renewal with one week’s notice before your renewal date, by email to [email protected] — handy around school terms.
